5 Reasons Why You Should Write a Will

Making a Will can seem like a daunting task.

Putting it off is all too easy; “We’re not ready yet”, “it’s too morbid”, “everyone knows what my wishes are”….sound familiar? However, dying intestate (without a Will) means you have no control over what happens to your assets – assets that you have worked hard for and have the right to protect for your family. In 2012, approximately 70% of the people who died in the UK did not leave a Will, reducing the value of their beneficiaries’ inheritance and causing untold problems and additional costs at a difficult time. There are many reasons to have a Will, and we have selected a few of the most common below.

  • To appoint Executors – you can choose somebody to represent your estate from the moment you have passed away, and distribute it according to your wishes. If you do not have a Will, the court will appoint an administrator to act as an Executor.

  • To appoint beneficiaries – you choose how your assets are divided up between those you care about the most. Without a Will your estate will be split up according to the laws of intestacy, which is often not what you would have intended.
  • To express specific wishes – you can stipulate many wishes in a Will, such as creating a legacy where you leave specific assets to specific beneficiaries, leaving money to a charity, making arrangements for your pets and much more. Without a Will none of these wishes will be carried out and your estate will simply be split up in parts.
  • To avoid additional costs and legal complications – if you do not have a Will, courts will be more heavily involved in dealing with your estate which can lead to greater costs and delays. Combine this with the emotional distress your family will be going through and it can make for a very unpleasant time.
  • To include grandchildren – you may want to leave part of your estate to grandchildren, either as a legacy or in a trust. Without a Will, the chances are your grandchildren would not receive any of your estate.

Those are very expensive price from WSL. I would urge people to make a local enquiry as Will writing is a very competitive business. Also, I would urge people to look at the Institute of Professional Willwriters web site: http://www.ipw.org.uk/

Hello David, We believe the offer from WSL to be very competitive in todays market, especially with the discount offered to Silverhairs. However, we would agree that it is always advisable to get comparable like for like quotes for any service required, to ensure what you are buying represents good value for money.
